  • EngageTell his life as a short, visual story.
Process

Test, redesign, then test again

An academic project in usability testing: evaluate a live website with real users, redesign it from what they struggled with, then evaluate it again with the same methods, so every change is measured against where it started.

  1. Illustration: a designer catching bugs in an old interface with a net
    01

    Formative evaluation

Moderated think-aloud sessions on the existing site, to find usability issues.

    5 participants · 3 tasks
  2. Illustration: a designer rearranging interface panels

    Redesign

Improving problematic areas based on findings.

    Structure, brand, screens
  3. Illustration: a designer presenting charts at a lectern
    03

    Summative evaluation

The same sessions on the redesign, to measure what changed.

    Same people · same tasks

How each session ran

  • Moderated usability testing

In-person sessions on the live site. Each participant worked through task scenarios while I observed where they hesitated, backtracked or gave up.

  • Think-aloud protocol

Participants said what they were looking for and thinking as they went, so every pause and wrong turn came with a reason.

Recorded for every taskActionsThoughtsEmotionsSuggestions

The same scenarios, methods and measures were used in both rounds: a formative evaluation of the existing site, and a summative evaluation of the redesign.

Problem analysis

What did the existing site look like?

As someone deeply interested in art, I came across Picasso's website and found it difficult to navigate, with scattered information and an outdated design. This project focused on three parts of it: the navigation bar, the homepage and the biography.

Formative usability testing

How did people get on with it?

A moderated, in-person usability test with 5 participants: art enthusiasts, students and general users. Each one thought aloud while completing three task scenarios on the existing site, and I logged their actions, thoughts, emotions and suggestions.

Where testing landed

Sort the art by year and period, make it searchable, and turn the text into short, visual stories.

Redesign development

Structure first, then the brand

On the old site, most content was buried inside a long, flat menu. I mapped the entire website into clear sections, so every page has a place in the navigation. Three of these pages were designed in this project.

Did the redesign work?

A summative evaluation of the redesign, with the same participants, same task scenarios and the same think-aloud method, so the results compare directly with the first round.
